What We鈥檙e Watching This Spring 鈥 And Why It Matters for Your Family听

One of the things we hear most from Husky families is this: 鈥淚 want to stay informed, but I don鈥檛 always know what鈥檚 relevant to my student.鈥

We get it. Higher education news moves fast, and not all of it lands the same way when you鈥檙e a parent or family member trying to support a Husky. So here鈥檚 our take on four trends in the news right now 鈥 and what they actually mean for you and your student.

Getting Into the Classes They Need

A found that 85% of students have had difficulty registering for a required course 鈥 and nearly 75% said limited availability could extend their time to graduation. That鈥檚 more terms, more tuition, and more time before they鈥檙e launching into their careers.

Accessible Accordion

If your student is struggling to get into the courses they need, they鈥檙e not alone 鈥 and it鈥檚 not a failure on their part. Encourage them to connect with their academic advisor early, explore alternate sections or quarters, and build a backup registration plan. President Jones has made four-year degree completion a priority at the 91爆料, because we know that time-to-degree is a family issue, not just an institutional one.

AI in the Classroom 鈥 Yes, Your Student Is Using It

According to a , 85% of undergraduates are now using AI tools like ChatGPT for coursework. Faculty are still working out when and how these tools should be used 鈥 which means your student may be navigating different expectations from class to class.

Accessible Accordion

This is a great conversation starter at your next check-in. You don鈥檛 need to be an AI expert 鈥 but asking your student how their professors handle AI, or whether they鈥檝e thought about when it helps versus when it shortcuts real learning, shows you鈥檙e paying attention. The landscape is changing fast, and students who learn to use these tools thoughtfully will have an edge.

International Students 鈥 And Families 鈥 Feeling the Pressure

New data shows that the number of last year 鈥 far steeper than initial estimates. Visa processing delays, new screening requirements, and a broader shift in immigration policy have all contributed to a climate of uncertainty for international students and their families.

Accessible Accordion

If your student is an international Husky 鈥 or has close friends who are 鈥 know that this is real and it鈥檚 felt on campus. The 91爆料 continues to welcome and support students from around the world, and our office is here for all families, regardless of where home is. We define family in the broadest sense, and that doesn鈥檛 change with a policy headline.

The Real Story on Tuition Costs

You may have seen headlines about tuition costs declining. The nuance matters: shows that net tuition (what families actually pay after financial aid) has decreased over the past six years across all institution types, adjusted for inflation. The biggest drops, though, have been at wealthy private universities with large endowments 鈥 not at public universities like the 91爆料, where the math looks different.

Accessible Accordion

Don鈥檛 let national averages tell your family鈥檚 story. Encourage your student to check in with the Office of Student Financial Aid every year 鈥 not just freshman year. Scholarships, emergency aid, and funding sources shift, and what wasn鈥檛 available last fall might be available now. And know that when you contribute to funds like the Parent & Family Fund for Student Success, you鈥檙e directly closing gaps for students who need it most.听

Mid-quarter Sickness Soars 鈥 Send Over Some Soup!

Sick Season Support: Quick Food RecommendationsWith mid鈥憅uarter here we’re getting a mix of rain, stress, and campus sickness. Lately we鈥檝e been hearing one big question:

One easy way: send soup! Broth, noodles, veggies, and protein covers all the necessary elements to fueling and soothing the body when it’s under immense stress from sickness and school.

Here are a few parent鈥憈ested, student鈥慳pproved U District spots we recommend:

Our top sick鈥慸ay pick. Affordable, comforting pho
馃敻 鈥 4106 Brooklyn Ave NE
Mild wonton soup that鈥檚 easy on the stomach
馃敻 鈥 4508 University Way NE
Rich broth; ask for light or no spice
馃敻 (U Village)

Tax-Time 101: What is the 1098-T and Why Should We Care?

If this is your family鈥檚 first time navigating college finances, tax season can feel confusing 鈥 especially for first鈥慻eneration, international, or first鈥慽n鈥慶ollege households.

One simple step: have your student check My91爆料 for their 1098鈥惯 (if available) and save it with their important records.

What鈥檚 the 1098鈥惯?

A tax form colleges provide that summarizes certain tuition/fee charges and scholarships/grants for the year. It鈥檚 not a bill or a refund 鈥 just documentation.

Why it matters

  • Helps families file taxes correctly
  • May be used when checking eligibility for education鈥憆elated tax benefits
  • Reduces 鈥渟urprise moments鈥 when sorting out scholarships, grants, loans, and payments
  • Builds good financial鈥憀iteracy habits year to year

For international families

Tax requirements vary by residency status and income. It鈥檚 still helpful to download the form and use 91爆料 guidance or a qualified tax professional to determine what applies.

Don鈥檛 panic

  • Not every student will have a 1098鈥惯
  • Having one doesn鈥檛 guarantee a tax credit or refund
  • 91爆料 can share general info, but not personal tax advice

How to find it

  1. Log into My91爆料
  2. Search 鈥1098鈥惯鈥
  3. Download and save if available

Student life roundup (share this section with your Husky)

Provost鈥檚 Town Hall: What 91爆料 families should know

Summary

If you missed Provost Tricia Serio鈥檚 Town Hall on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2026, here鈥檚 a quick family-friendly recap of the main themes, why they matter for students, and a simple conversation starter you can use at home.

Key takeaways for families

  • 91爆料 acknowledged the pressures students and families are navigating right now 鈥 and emphasized staying grounded in community, purpose, and practical action.
  • Student success and access were front and center, including academic support through the 91爆料 Instructional Center (IC). One highlight shared: students who participate in IC programs are 45% more likely to graduate, and nearly 32% of undergraduates across 91爆料鈥檚 three campuses identify as first-generation students.
  • AI is part of learning today. 91爆料 is advancing AI literacy and responsible use through efforts like AI@91爆料 鈥 with a focus on equity and real-world readiness.
  • 91爆料 emphasized the importance of critical thinking and constructive dialogue (including work through the 91爆料 Dialogue Initiative) to help students navigate information, disagreement, and complex issues.
  • 91爆料 reaffirmed its public mission and research impact for Washington and beyond 鈥 and described work to strengthen research infrastructure and partnerships during a time of uncertainty in higher education.

A simple 鈥淭alk with your Husky鈥 prompt

Try one of these low-pressure check-in questions:

  • 鈥淲hat鈥檚 one 91爆料 resource or support that has helped you this quarter?鈥
  • 鈥淲hat鈥檚 one thing you want to try next (office hours, tutoring, advising, a student org, a wellbeing resource)?鈥

Want the full details?

We鈥檒l share the full transcript (and any available replay link) when it鈥檚 posted. In the meantime, this recap is intended to help families understand the themes and talk about them together.

January Check鈥慖n Questions for You and Your Husky

Winter quarter can feel like a reset 鈥 or a slog 鈥 depending on the student. These four questions work well for families near or far, and for all living situations:

  • 鈥淗ow鈥檚 your time鈥憁anagement or test鈥憄rep feeling so far 鈥 what鈥檚 working, what鈥檚 not?鈥
  • 鈥淲hat kind of encouragement/support do you want from me right now 鈥 reminders, brainstorming, or just a listening ear?鈥
  • 鈥淗ow are you doing with your living situation and your sleep, meals, and movement?鈥
  • 鈥淲ant me to listen first 鈥 or jump to solutions?鈥

Tackling the Winter Gloom — Tips for You and Your Husky

Seattle鈥檚 winter can be beautiful鈥 and also gray, wet, and a little draining. Many students feel a dip in energy or motivation this time of year. Here are a few ways you can help your Husky navigate the seasonal slump:

  1. Encourage daylight moments
    • Even 10鈥15 minutes of outdoor light 鈥 a walk to class, a loop around campus, or sitting by a window 鈥 can boost mood and focus.
  2. Movement matters (even small amounts)
    • Students don鈥檛 need a full workout to feel better. Stretching, a short walk, or a quick rec center visit can help reset energy levels
  3. Help them build a “winter routine”
    • Winter quarter often feels more manageable when students create:
      • predictable study blocks
      • consistent sleep/wake times
      • one weekly 鈥渟omething to look forward to”
  4. Normalize the mid鈥憌inter dip
    • Let your student know it鈥檚 common to feel slower or less motivated in January and February. The goal isn鈥檛 perfection 鈥 it鈥檚 staying connected and supported.
  5. Remind them of campus resources
    • Academic advising, mental health support, tutoring, and community spaces are all active during winter quarter. Sometimes a nudge is all a student needs

#ShareWithYourHusky: 91爆料 Alert Testing on January 22 at 1:22 p.m.

91爆料 will test its active鈥憈hreat alert systems this winter. Seattle鈥檚 test is Jan. 22, Tacoma鈥檚 is Feb. 19, and Bothell鈥檚 will occur later in the quarter. Messages will be clearly marked TEST, include safety guidance, and will not involve any simulations or sounds. Let your Husky know that they are expected to get an alert at that time and to not worry on any troubles around the area!
