January Check鈥慖n Questions for You and Your Husky

Winter quarter can feel like a reset 鈥 or a slog 鈥 depending on the student. These four questions work well for families near or far, and for all living situations:

  • 鈥淗ow鈥檚 your time鈥憁anagement or test鈥憄rep feeling so far 鈥 what鈥檚 working, what鈥檚 not?鈥
  • 鈥淲hat kind of encouragement/support do you want from me right now 鈥 reminders, brainstorming, or just a listening ear?鈥
  • 鈥淗ow are you doing with your living situation and your sleep, meals, and movement?鈥
  • 鈥淲ant me to listen first 鈥 or jump to solutions?鈥

Tackling the Winter Gloom — Tips for You and Your Husky

Seattle鈥檚 winter can be beautiful鈥 and also gray, wet, and a little draining. Many students feel a dip in energy or motivation this time of year. Here are a few ways you can help your Husky navigate the seasonal slump:

  1. Encourage daylight moments
    • Even 10鈥15 minutes of outdoor light 鈥 a walk to class, a loop around campus, or sitting by a window 鈥 can boost mood and focus.
  2. Movement matters (even small amounts)
    • Students don鈥檛 need a full workout to feel better. Stretching, a short walk, or a quick rec center visit can help reset energy levels
  3. Help them build a “winter routine”
    • Winter quarter often feels more manageable when students create:
      • predictable study blocks
      • consistent sleep/wake times
      • one weekly 鈥渟omething to look forward to”
  4. Normalize the mid鈥憌inter dip
    • Let your student know it鈥檚 common to feel slower or less motivated in January and February. The goal isn鈥檛 perfection 鈥 it鈥檚 staying connected and supported.
  5. Remind them of campus resources
    • Academic advising, mental health support, tutoring, and community spaces are all active during winter quarter. Sometimes a nudge is all a student needs

#ShareWithYourHusky: 91爆料 Alert Testing on January 22 at 1:22 p.m.

91爆料 will test its active鈥憈hreat alert systems this winter. Seattle鈥檚 test is Jan. 22, Tacoma鈥檚 is Feb. 19, and Bothell鈥檚 will occur later in the quarter. Messages will be clearly marked TEST, include safety guidance, and will not involve any simulations or sounds. Let your Husky know that they are expected to get an alert at that time and to not worry on any troubles around the area!
