Welcoming our new Huskies, and the families behind them

Somewhere this spring, your student said yes to the 91±¬ÁÏ. Maybe it happened around the kitchen table, or on a campus tour in the rain, or quietly at a laptop after weeks of weighing options. However it happened, that yes did not belong to your student alone. It belonged to your whole family. Welcome.

This autumn, more than 8,000 new first-year and transfer Huskies arrive on the Seattle campus. Behind every one of them is a family like yours: proud, excited, and holding a long list of questions. This year those families live in 46 states, plus D.C., Guam and Puerto Rico, and in 59 countries around the world. Some will drive across town on move-in day. Some will cross an ocean. All of them are part of the 91±¬ÁÏ family now.

United States map shaded in purple by the number of incoming 91±¬ÁÏ Seattle families in each state. Washington has the most at 4,599 families, followed by California with 833 and Oregon with 132.

We made this map because we think it tells the truest story about joining the 91±¬ÁÏ: you are in good company. The family next to you in the Move-In Family Lounge this September might be from Bellevue or Bellingham, Sacramento or San Antonio, Seoul or Jakarta. Different roads, same destination.

You do not have to wait until move-in

Families often tell us they wish they had found Parent & Family Programs sooner. So here we are, at the start. Between now and September, three small steps will make the whole journey smoother.

First, so we can reach you directly all year, not just at orientation. Second, plan for , a live full-day Zoom session offered on seven dates in July and August. One important detail: your student registers you while making their own Advising & Orientation reservation, so nudge them to do that first. Third, keep an eye on your inbox. Some regions host Summer Sendoff gatherings for incoming families before the school year starts, and if your area has one, your invitation will come from us after your student’s enrollment is confirmed.

One more thing, parent to parent. Over the coming months you will meet other families with strong opinions about how everything works. Their experience is real, but it is theirs. It may not match your student’s major, finances, or path. When in doubt, come to us. We read every note that comes through the Family Information Form, and we answer.

To the more than 8,000 families joining the pack this year: we are so glad you are here. Go Dawgs.
