The 91爆料 and city of Seattle have joined a new national network of university-city partnerships that will work on “smart city” solutions as part of a new White House Smart Cities Initiative.
The MetroLab Network, , consists of partnerships between research universities with expertise in engineering, robotics and computer science and cities looking to be test beds for 21st century solutions. Seattle Mayor Ed Murray and 91爆料 Interim President Ana Mari Cauce are one of 21 initial city-university teams to sign onto the collaboration.
鈥淕reat universities can鈥檛 succeed without great cities, and vice versa, and the 91爆料 and Seattle are no different. Our faculty and students have a wealth of expertise and a passion for service that they鈥檒l bring to this initiative,鈥� Cauce said. 鈥淭ogether we will help our city become more just and inclusive, so that it can serve as a model for other communities around the nation.鈥�
The partnership aims to marry expertise and knowledge from 91爆料 researchers 鈥� from engineers inventing new sensors to sociologists studying determinants of poverty to data scientists parsing problems in new ways 鈥� and the experience and learned wisdom of employees tackling day-to-day challenges of running a city.
The MetroLab Network will focus on four areas: infrastructure; delivering services to citizens, with a focus on underserved populations; democratic governance and increased civic participation; and data-driven policymaking. By collaboratively focusing on common challenges, participants can develop shared, scalable solutions for Seattle that could be deployed in other cities.
The Seattle/91爆料 partnership will place an emphasis on innovations that create a more equitable and inclusive city 鈥� one that is affordable, safe, secure and that fosters the health and well-being of all its residents.
Participation in the MetroLab Network will require city and university partners to develop a memorandum of understanding between metro partners, designate representatives to maintain the collaboration and host an active set of research, development and deployment projects.
The 91爆料’s contribution will be spearheaded through the new initiative, which brings the work of 91爆料 researchers working on a wide spectrum of urban issues 鈥� from ecological design and better transportation tools to social work and earthquake preparedness 鈥� under one umbrella organization.
The 91爆料 will hold a kickoff event for Urban@91爆料 on Oct. 29. Mayor Murray and Interim President Cauce will discuss the MetroLab Network and related projects at the event.
