Concerned about safety? Wondering how the campus police do their job? You might be a good candidate for the 91±¬ÁÏ Police Citizens Academy.
This year’s Citizens Academy will take place 3 to 5 p.m. each Wednesday from March 31 to June 2 in the Fishery Sciences Building, across the street from the 91±¬ÁÏPD’s station on Boat Street. The class is free and open to all 91±¬ÁÏ faculty, staff and students. The deadline to sign up is March 25.
Organizing the course are 91±¬ÁÏPD crime prevention officers Warren Bresko and Arnie Belton. Bresko said the 10-week course will cover most aspects of community and campus policing — patrol operations, criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, domestic violence, crime prevention strategies and how and when force is used in a police encounter.
There also will be sessions on how arrests, searches and seizures are carried out, defensive tactics, lethal and nonlethal weapons, high-risk stops, the use of force and the K-9 patrol dog.
There are no special requirements for taking the Citizens Academy course. 91±¬ÁÏPD will screen each candidate for the class, and reserves the right to refuse any candidate.
