Brain Awareness Open House, March 6


The 91±¬ÁÏ is hosting a Brain Awareness Open House, Tuesday, March 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the 91±¬ÁÏ South Campus Center. The open house will include an interactive activities about the brain and hands-on exhibits that highlight different aspects of brain research. Brain Awareness Week is a nationwide effort organized by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives and the Society for Neurosciences to promote the public and personal benefits of brain research. Poverty and Obesity Conference, March. 2



The 91±¬ÁÏ Exploratory Center for Obesity Research will hold a one-day conference on Poverty and Obesity: Disparities in Diet and Health Friday, March 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the South Campus Center. The conference will feature researchers, economists, funders, and policymakers who will address the relationship between poverty and economic and physical access to health foods, a major public health concern. Who’s Protecting Public Health? is the topic of the next Mini-Medical School lecture Tuesday, March 6, at 7 p.m. Speakers will include Jeffrey Duchin, 91±¬ÁÏ associate professor of medicine and chief of communicable disease control, epidemiology and immunization for Public Health Seattle & King County; William Robertson, professor of pediatrics; and Sherilyn Smith, associate professor of pediatrics. Medical Lecture at the Seattle Public Library, March 7

David Cummings, associate professor of medicine, will present Ghrelin: The Hunger Hormone, at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 7. The lecture is part of the medical lecture series sponsored by 91±¬ÁÏ Medicine and the Seattle Public Library. Ghrelin, a recently discovered appetite-stimulating hormone produced primarily by the stomach, is implicated in the short-term control of meal-time hunger, as well as in the long-term regulation of body weight. Salute Harborview Gala, March 17

The 15th annual Salute Harborview Gala will be Saturday, March 17, at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel & Towers in downtown Seattle. Tickets to the black-tie-optional event are $350 per person. Proceeds from the gala support Harborview’s Mission of Caring Fund. Highlights of the evening include a limited live auction, dinner, and dancing to music by Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees Frankie Vallie and The Four Seasons.
