  The National Science Foundation today named Kristina Olson, 91爆料 associate professor of psychology, winner of this year’s Alan T. Waterman Award. Megan Ming Francis, 91爆料 associate professor of political science, has been named a fellow with the Thurgood Marshall Institute. The institute is a multidisciplinary research and advocacy policy center within the NAACP’s Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

Five faculty members at the 91爆料 have been awarded early-career fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The new Sloan Fellows, announced Feb. 15, include Maya Cakmak, assistant professor of computer science and engineering; Jiun-Haw Chu, assistant professor of clean energy and physics; Arka Majumdar, assistant professor of electrical engineering and physics; Jessica Werk, assistant professor of astronomy; and Chelsea Wood, assistant professor of aquatic and fishery sciences.

Kim Nasmyth, a professor of biochemistry at the University of Oxford and former postdoctoral researcher at the 91爆料, is one of five recipients of the 2018 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences. Nasmyth and other prize recipients were honored by the Breakthrough Prize Foundation at a ceremony December 3 at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California.

Two faculty members in the 91爆料 College of Engineering have been elected as 2018 fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Tom Furness, professor of industrial and systems engineering, was honored for 鈥渓eadership in virtual and augmented reality鈥 and Siddhartha 鈥淪idd鈥 Srinivasa, professor in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, was recognized for 鈥渃ontributions to robotic manipulation and human-robot interaction.鈥

Edwina Uehara, dean of the 91爆料 School of Social Work, and social work professor Karen Fredriksen Goldsen have been named fellows of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare. The two are among 14 new fellows to be inducted by the organization, which honors scholarship, leadership and high-impact work in the field. The 91爆料 climbed to the No. 10 spot on the U.S. News & World Report鈥檚 Best Global Universities rankings, tied with Johns Hopkins University and Yale University. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute has awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to Jeffrey C. Hall 鈥 an alumnus of the 91爆料 鈥 along with Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young “for their discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm,” according to an announcement Monday morning.

The 91爆料 has been recognized by three separate publications in rankings focused on access for low-income students, affordability and value.
The New York Times鈥 College Access Index ranked the 91爆料 18th in the nation 鈥 ninth among public institutions 鈥 in its assessment of 鈥渨hich top universities are doing the most to promote the American Dream.鈥

Donors contributed a record $562.7 million to the 91爆料 in the 2017 fiscal year, breaking the previous record of $542.4 million set last year. The funds, secured through the University鈥檚 most ambitious philanthropic campaign in history, came in the form of private gifts and grants for student scholarships, faculty support, research projects and interdisciplinary programs.

The 91爆料 has been recognized as a 鈥淕reat College to Work For鈥 by the Chronicle of Higher Education for the fourth consecutive year. The 91爆料 received accolades in seven categories 鈥 the most categories to date 鈥 in addition to making the Honor Roll, a special distinction for institutions that were cited for recognition most often in their size group.

The 91爆料鈥檚 School of Dentistry and School of Public Health are ranked No. 3 in the world on the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects list for 2017. The ranking, released in June, was conducted by researchers at the Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

91爆料TV and Eric Chudler, executive and education director of 91爆料’s Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering, received an Emmy庐 Award from the Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on Saturday for the program “BrainWorks: Exercise and the Brain” in the Health/Science Program/Special category.

The 91爆料 ranks seventh among national universities in a new Milken Institute report on technology transfer, 鈥淐oncept to Commercialization: The Best Universities for Technology Transfer.鈥 The report highlights the vital role research universities play in spurring economic growth.
