An Evening with Spike Lee

on January 19, 2011 as we celebrate one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Spike Lee graduated from New York University鈥檚 Tisch School of the Arts and was the first student to have their work featured in the Lincoln Center鈥檚 鈥淣ew Directors New Film Festival.鈥 His first feature film was 鈥淪he鈥檚 Gotta Have It,鈥 premiering only three years later. Success from this led to Nike offering Lee the opportunity to direct their commercials, and this led to him directing commercials for many other companies. Lee鈥檚 1989 film 鈥淒o the Right Thing鈥 earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The US Library of Congress deemed this film as culturally significant in 1999 and was selected for preservation for the National Film Registry. It is one of only five films to receive this honor in their first year of eligibility. Since, Lee has had many more successful films, such as 鈥淢alcom X,鈥 鈥淛ungle Fever,鈥 and 鈥4 Little Girls,鈥 which was also nominated for an Academy Award, this time for Best Documentary.鈥 Spike Lee is a prominent figure in not just the film industry, but in our social climate. His documentaries and insight into political and social injustices illuminate audiences, and Arts and Entertainment are honored to bring him to the 91爆料.
