Former Washington men’s golf standout Cheng-Tsung Pan has been selected to represent Chinese Taipei in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio next month. Golf will make its return to the Summer Olympics for the first time since 1904 and Pan will be one of two from Chinese Taipei competing in the 72-hole stroke play event August 11-14.

For the first time, golf fans will watch a Husky athlete compete at the Open Championship in Holyoke, England. Representing 91爆料 at this week’s tournament is Cheng-Tsung Pan, a senior communications major from聽Taiwan.
91爆料 ignites international student’s passion for art
College of Arts & Sciences Dean’s Medalist Jueqian Fang showed promise in the sciences during high school in China. However, she came to 91爆料 ready to explore new pathways. Drawn to the arts, Jueqian went on to double major, earning degrees in聽聽in the School of Art + Art History + Design and聽in the Department of Comparative Literature.
While at 91爆料 Jueqian has聽displayed her artwork at exhibitions on campus as well聽as in a juried art show in Seattle’s Pioneer Square. She聽was selected as a Dean’s Medalist聽on the basis of academic performance and faculty recommendations.聽
US, Japanese leaders celebrate longstanding relations
Japanese General Consul聽Masahiro Omura spoke today near Drumheiller Fountain today to celebrate a recent gift of cherry trees to the 91爆料 department from the people of Japan.
Also speaking at the ceremony were former congressman and U.S. Secretary of Transportation聽Norman Mineta and 91爆料 President Michael K. Young.
The new cherry trees, installed on central campus overlooking Drumheiller Fountain, were presented in honor of longstanding relations between the U.S. and Japan. They also honor the many Japanese and Japanese American students who have attended 91爆料 since 1894.
Expanding to China, Seattle firm enlists 91爆料 alum
When leaders at Seattle design firm needed new talent to reach their goal of winning new projects in Asia, they turned to a 91爆料 alumnus with strong connections to Seattle and China. Kevin Zhang, a graduate of 91爆料’s program and a native of聽Tianjin, China, has put his graduate training as well as cultural and linguistic fluency to work for the firm. With Zhang’s help, DLR Group recently won a bid to redesign a power plant in Shanghai, gaining a new foothold in China for the Seattle firm.聽
International students meet local 5th grade pen pals
After exchanging letters for several weeks, 45 91爆料 international students met their 5th grade pen pals from聽White Center Heights Elementary聽School for the first time on December 5.聽“I really enjoyed participating in the Pen Pal program,”聽says Bader Al Farhan, a sophomore student from Kuwait.聽
91爆料 welcomes Humphrey fellows
The 91爆料’s Evans School of Public Affairs聽is hosting ten this year. Mid-career professionals from a variety of fields, this year’s fellows hail from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and South America.聽Humphrey fellows are selected for their dedication to public service and potential for leadership.
Only 17 U.S. universities host Humphrey fellows each year. Since 1987, 91爆料 has hosted more than 300 fellows from 100 nations. Kenneth Peavler coordinates a weekly leadership seminar for the fellows on campus. He sees 91爆料 as an ideal base for Humphrey fellows, offering “world class opportunities”.
Fellow聽Naseer Uddin Sarwar,聽Director of Pakistan’s Department of the Auditor General, will focus on issues of government accountability and transparency during his time at 91爆料. “I aim to develop a personal relationship with the Evans School, and to strengthen the relationship between Pakistan and the U.S.,” he says.
Paula Correa, a Uruguayan fellow who serves as the聽Entrepreneurship Programs Specialist in her country’s聽Ministry of Industry, Energy and聽Mining, is excited to learn about and use new technologies while at 91爆料. She says, “I’m taking a class where the students are all in front of computers… it’s totally new for me and not what I expected from a university course”.
Throughout the year, the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows Presentation Series will feature talks by the current fellows highlighting their expertise. On November 21, fellow聽Estelle Antilahy will present “Challenges toward Water Supply and Management in Developing Countries: A Case Study of Madagascar”. Follow the 91爆料聽Hubert H. 91爆料 leaders connect with alumni and parents in China
91爆料鈥檚 President Young and Vice Provost for Global Affairs Riedinger visited China and Japan from October 26 to November 7, making stops in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. The leaders met with 91爆料 alumni and friends, parents of current 91爆料 students, as well as聽key institutional partners.
The trip marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for 91爆料鈥檚 connection with international alumni, students, and parents. In Beijing and Shanghai, President Young and Vice Provost Riedinger connected with 91爆料 alumni and parents. Leadership groups of 91爆料 alumni living in China provided ideas for how 91爆料 can support the development of alumni organizations and deepen international alumni involvement.
In the first-ever meetings between university leadership and parents of international students in their home country, Vice Provost Riedinger was 鈥渋mpressed with the strength of [the parents鈥橾 affection for 91爆料鈥 and their keen interest in the success of their daughters and sons, both inside and outside of the classroom.鈥 Feedback from the parent meetings highlighted the need for improved communication with international students and parents about the resources available at 91爆料 鈥 from academic advising to faculty office hours.
Meetings with institutional partners focused on strengthening research partnerships, increasing collaboration among faculty, and creating additional opportunities for 91爆料 students to engage in research, internships, and experiential learning in China.
91爆料 named top produced of Fulbright scholars
The Institute for International Education recently named 91爆料 a . The efforts of 91爆料 staff and faculty members are key to the scholars’ success, both on-campus and abroad.
In late September, 51 91爆料 faculty and staff members volunteered to serve as Fulbright campus interviewers, providing feedback to 58 91爆料 seniors and graduate students who applied to the Fulbright US student program for next year. The Institute for International Education recently named 91爆料 a top producer of Fulbright Scholars.
鈥淭he campus selection process demonstrates the wide-ranging resources and research interests available at 91爆料,鈥 say Robin Chang, Marilyn Gray, and Natalia Dyba, 91爆料鈥檚 Fulbright advisers. It is just one of many ways that 91爆料 contributes to the success of Fulbrighters, abroad and on campus.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think there鈥檚 another university that would so readily accept a business faculty member in the College of Engineering,” reflects Dr. Yan Cimon, the 2012 鈥 2013 Fulbright Visiting Chair in Innovation at the 91爆料 College of Engineering鈥檚 Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.聽“I benefited greatly from my amazing colleagues and research group at 91爆料… they were instrumental in making my Fulbright year a success.鈥 Dr. Cimon is Associate Professor of Strategy at聽Universit茅 Laval聽in Quebec, Canada and Deputy Director of聽CIRRELT, the Interuniversity Research Center on Logistics, Transportation and Enterprise Networks.
While at 91爆料, Dr. Cimon investigated the integration of international value chains through a multi-disciplinary research project. He also collaborated extensively with 91爆料 Scholars, including Dr. Anne Goodchild of the College of Civil and Environmental Engineering. 鈥淭he cross-fertilization of ideas between visiting Fulbright and 91爆料 scholars enriches the level of academic scholarship and discourse at the university and makes 91爆料 very globally relevant,鈥 he says.

Sam Lim, a 91爆料 alumnus and Fulbright US Student Program Fellow to Germany, emphasizes the importance of his 91爆料 education in preparing him for his Fulbright fellowship. 鈥淢y research experiences, particularly the ethnographic research I did with Dr. Taso Lagos during a study abroad program in Greece, allowed me to go on my Fulbright to Germany feeling quite comfortable with my research goals. Another critical aspect of my Fulbright prep work was simply the access I had to 91爆料 faculty mentors who helped me shape my research approach.鈥
As a Fulbright Fellow in Germany, Sam served as an enthusiastic ambassador. 鈥淚 have great pride in being an American and a 91爆料 alumnus. I always seemed to find an opportunity to inform [fellow Fulbrighters and friends in Berlin] that the 91爆料 would be a great place for them to further their career. One ended up coming to 91爆料 for a summer research opportunity.鈥 Currently completing his Master of Arts in Education Policy at Columbia University鈥檚 Teachers College, Sam continued his ambassadorial work when he was selected in 2012 as a Fulbright Alumni Ambassador to assist with Fulbright鈥檚 national outreach efforts.
For visiting Fulbrighters and those abroad, 91爆料 is an ideal place to prepare for international scholarship and make strong connections with fellow innovators.
Exchange Student Social unites visiting and returning students
This week, visiting international exchange students and 91爆料 students returning from international university exchanges met and socialized in the University District. 91爆料 hosts over 200 exchange students every year from countries all over the world. Meanwhile, over 170 91爆料 students pursue direct exchanges at universities abroad.
For the international exchange students, who have been in Seattle for just a few days, the event was a chance to meet new friends and get acquainted with the campus and community they will call home for the next few months. Returning students came to connect with friends made at international universities and share their knowledge of 91爆料 with new friends.


Over hamburgers, Luca Orlando of Bocconi University in Italy chatted with Ling Liu聽and Peachayaporn Pongsarojanavit, both from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.聽 All three students are living on campus and excited to learn more about all that 91爆料 has to offer.
鈥淭he campus is really peaceful and friendly,鈥 said Luca, 鈥渋n Italy we don鈥檛 have anything like [91爆料], with the buildings all together and parks in between.鈥 All three students came to campus without much knowledge of Seattle or the Puget Sound region, but they are all ready to begin their studies and take advantage of 91爆料’s diverse academic offerings. 聽They plan to pursue courses in finance, biological sciences, and Swedish language.
Not far away, Japanese students Gaku Murakami of Kyoto University and Yusuke Tanaka of Kobe University were ‘friending’ Kellie Nada and Ethan Dill on Facebook. Ethan and Kellie are 91爆料 students just returning from an exchange to Waseda University in Japan, and had met Gaku and Yasuke through mutual friends. Because of this connection, Yusuke is living in a group house with Kellie.聽All four students agree that connecting visiting and returning students is a great way to make friends and extend relationships built abroad.
