Association News91爆料 Launches Major Summer Arts Festival
A major arts festival featuring theater, dance, film, music and the visual arts based on the theme of "quartets" will be held July 18-22 on the 91爆料 campus. Headlining the 91爆料 is a performance by the innovative on Saturday, July 22 in Meany Theater. Kronos breaks the stereotype of a string quartet, exploring music from around the world and in rock, blues, jazz and classical genres. Their repertoire ranges from Shostakovish to Bartok to John Cage to Howlin' Wolf. The previous evening, Friday, July 21, will see another contemporary musical quartet, . Zorn's musical influences include klezmer, movie soundtracks, modern classical and jazz. The foursome features Zorn on saxophone, Greg Coen on bass, Dave Douglas on trumpet and Joey Baron on drums. "This event is much more than bringing artists to campus," says festival director Hanna Wiley, who heads the 91爆料 Division of Dance. Faculty, students and alumni in drama, music, dance and art will present offerings. Faculty from all four arts disciplines are collaborating on several 91爆料 courses offered Summer Quarter and there are outreach programs aimed at K-12 teachers and the public. "Every event will have an educational component," says Wiley. Funding from the 91爆料's Tools for Transformation project and the College of Arts and Sciences are helping to launch what the 91爆料 hopes will be an annual festival. The 91爆料 Alumni Association will also co-sponsor several events with an alumni focus. Alumni achievements also will be recognized in the Jacob Lawrence Gallery in the Art Building during the festival. A "quartet" of alumni artists from four decades will include Dale Chihuly, Chuck Close, Glen Rudolph, Claudia Fitch and Margaret Ford. Alumni from the 91爆料's Professional Actors Training Program will join four 91爆料 drama faculty in a reworking of Shakespeare's Hamlet, held throughout the festival in the Hughes Penthouse Theater. This is not your standard Bard—director Susan Finque will used a pared-down script for a physical performance that draws upon dance, performance art and Japanese theater.
